According to an inspiring and informative CPD event I recently attended, speaker, Tom Bates highlights that individuals can be motivated by fulfilling 6 core human needs. This enables us to begin to understand what drives our decisions and behaviours on a daily basis. Once we develop a deeper awareness around the core needs we can construct methods to meet these needs in a resourceful way.

What are the Six Core Human Needs covered by Tom Bates?

The Six Core Human Needs are variety, certainty, connection, significance, growth and contribution.

We can take these six needs and apply them to our coaching practice to maximise the chances of success and improve the well-being of ourselves and players.

  • Variety – the need for surprise, challenge, excitement, chaos and change.
  • Certainty – the need for safety, security, consistency and control.

These two needs work with each other, an imbalance in one could lead to negative effects, for example, extremely high levels of certainty within our practises could lead to boredom and individuals may start to crave adventure.

  • Connection – the need for communication, approval, unified and being attached to others.
  • Significance – the need to have meaning, being wanted and a sense of importance.

Again, these two needs can work together, if as coaches we spend too much time gaining significance we jeopardise the opportunity to develop intimate meaningful relationships.

  • Growth – intellectual and emotional development
  • Contribution – Caring, protecting and serving others.

We should provide opportunities within our practice for individuals to grow and contribute, to ensure these needs are met.

If we continue to gain a deeper understanding of the Six Core Human Needs we can start to develop a range of methods to help individuals meet these needs within training.

After listening to Tom Bates, we have started to include these Six Core Needs when planning sessions.
